Alamogordo is a small and friendly town in southern New Mexico. The city offers some really interesting space and science attractions due to it being so close in proximity to the missile range. Alamogordo can be an exciting place to be in the summer months especially if you enjoy exploring the desert as well as the mountains.   1. White Sands Missile Range Museum
The outside of the museum is a missile park that has more than 50 missiles and rockets. Many of the missiles at the museum are pointed skyward as if they could launch at any moment. In the museum, you will find the works of various accomplished scientists such as Dr. Clyde Thombaugh and Dr. Werner von Braun. Be prepared to go through security as the museum is located within an operational military compound.
  1. New Mexico Museum of Space History
A museum and planatarium dedicated to artifacts and displays related to space flight and the space age, including the International Space Hall of Fame. This museum highlights the role that New Mexico has had in the U.S. Space Program. This museum is a Smithsonian Affliate and is a great place to learn. They do offer memberships as well as theater showings and fun events on the calendar to check out!
  1. Alameda Park Zoo
Home to 200 animals the Alameda Park Zoo is a fun place to spend the day with animal lovers of all ages. The zoo is open 9 am - 5 pm, which gives plenty of time for a leisurely visit. Check out the newly remodeled reptile exhibit. If you are interested the zoo even offer several birthday party packages for during normal business hours as well as after. What a fun place to enjoy this summer!
  1. Heart of the Desert Pistachios and Wine
Offering free farm tours throughout the year as well as wine tasting at store locations let this be part of a fun adult day trip. A walking tour of the farm is given Monday - Friday and is about 45 minutes long. Eagle Ranch is home to the first and largest grove producing pistachios and Heart of the Desert wine was added in 2002 to add diversity to the farm. This is a fun spot to check out and learn about pistachios and have a little wine.
  1. Oliver Lee Memorial State Park
Set against the Sacremento Mountains the park features a historic ranch house, quiet camping spot, and an oasis of pools under the cottonwood trees. If you are camping you a reservation is required. Offering plenty of trails, excellent bird watching sites, and camping and picnicking Oliver Lee Memorial State Park is a good weekend getaway with or without the family.
  1. Toy Train Depot
The Toy Train Depot is a very unique train museum and has a little something for everyone. History buffs, souvenir seekers, and south west adventurers are all welcome here. Take a ride on the train after visiting the six rooms of the museum.
  1. Hi-D-Ho Drive In
What would a summer list be without a great place to eat! Hi-D-Ho drive in serves up burgers that look as good as they taste. It is family owned and has been voted “Best Cheeseburger” for over 30 years in New Mexico. Be sure to stop here or order ahead for lunch or dinner!
