Autumn Assessment: 6 Tips for Organizing your Storage Unit

We’ve all heard of spring cleaning but what about taking an autumn assessment? With the change of season, it’s a perfect time to assess your stuff. With a little bit of cleaning and organizing you can easily clear up some extra space in your storage unit. Here are a 6 tips to do your own autumn assessment: 1. Take Inventory Pull out big items or boxes from your unit so you have room to see everything that's inside. 2. Clear the Clutter Get rid of clutter, trash, and items that you no longer have use for. This will help open up what items need to be organized. 3. Organize Your Items Organize items into three categories. (1) items you want to keep in storage, (2) items to take back to your home, and (3) items to discard by donation, sale, or trash. 4. Box and Label If you have a lot of loose items, consolidate them by category (example: kitchen supplies, bedroom knick knacks, etc) and store those items in a box. Don’t forget to label what’s inside the box for easy finding when you need those items in the future. If you have other boxes in your unit that are not labeled, take a peek inside. If they are items you want to keep, clearly label them. 5. Seasonal Swaps Take any fall or winter items out of your unit and replace them with summer items you are no longer using at home. 6. Reorganize Your Layout As you place items back into your storage unit, group them by category (example: bedrooms, kitchen, outdoor supplies, tools, etc.). If possible, leave a small walkway so items are easily accessible in the future. If your unit is packed full, place least important items in the back and most important in the front. With all the planning you need to do, transportation to organize and days off work to take, you are going to be very busy. Use the following tips to make your packing simpler. Taking time to do this prior to packing will not only create more space for things you really want and make the packing process easier; it will also mean there is less to sort through when you get to your place! Clean it Up The smell of clean laurdy cannot be beat! Before packing up be sure your clothing is freshly laundered, this will make it ready for packing. Opening a musty smelling box of clothes in a brand new living space is not something you will want to do, so taking the extra step to wash all clothing prior to the big move is something you want to do. Popping some scented sachets or dryer sheets into your clothing boxes can give a boost of freshness as well! Ironing and pressing your clothes before packing can ensure they will be wear ready when pulling them out again. Military Vehicle Storage

Vehicle Storage Tips

If you're in the military and have to store your car for an extended period, there are several options available to you. You can keep it at home, on base, or even rent a storage unit. Any of these choices has its own set of pros and cons that we'll go over below! The most obvious option is to keep your car at home. This can be free or very cheap, depending on your living situation. You'll just need to find a spot to park it and make sure it's covered or in a garage if possible. The downside of this is that you'll have to rely on someone else to take care of it while you're gone. If you don't have a trusted friend or family member who can do this, it's probably not the best option. Pros: - No additional cost - If inside a garage, good weather protection - Friends or Family could have the vehicle serviced for you - You have immediate access to your vehicle - Works for short and long term deployment Cons: - Your family needs garage space your vehicle will be in the way - May not be in the best condition upon homecoming if no one was able to help maintain it - If left in the driveway possibility of damages or theft - Possibility to incur fines from a homeowners association - No protection from weather conditions or pests Another possibility is to keep your car on base. This can be a good option if you're only going to be deployed for a short period of time. You'll just need to check with your base's regulations to see if this is an option for you. If you are deployed for a longer period of time, or if you're not sure when you'll be able to come back, then self storage might be a better option for you. That way, you can keep your car off base and avoid having to pay for long-term parking. Pros: ...
