Secure Your Unit: The Best Locks to Use and Why

Self Storage Tips

Once you find a storage unit that fits your needs you’ll need to secure your unit with a lock. There are many options on the market but at Self Storage New Mexico we suggest getting the most secure, break-in proof lock possible. Locks we recommend Our top two picks for locking your storage unit are disc locks and closed shackle padlocks. Both of these lock types will give an added layer of protection to your unit and belongings. 1. Disc lock The disc lock is the #1 lock type we recommend at Self Storage New Mexico because of the tamper-resistant security it offers your storage unit. This type of lock is disc shaped and has a short shackle that sits tightly around the latch of the unit. Disc locks are very hard to pick as they have anti-pick pins and dual locking mechanisms. 2. Closed Shackle Padlock A closed shackle padlock is another great choice for securing your storage unit. This type of lock is unique because of its shackle. The shackle is the U-shaped bar at the top of the lock that secures the lock to your unit. A closed shackle padlock has a shorter and thicker shackle than regular padlocks. In addition, this type of lock has “shoulders” that extend up toward the top of the shackle acting as a protective case. These three features deter bolt cutters from being able to be used thus preventing break-ins. Invest in the Best While the locks listed above cost more than regular padlocks, the investment is worth the peace of mind you’ll have knowing your belongings are secured in your unit. We do not recommend single or multiple combination padlocks because we know they offer less assurance against break-ins. Of course, at Self Storage New Mexico we take many measures to secure the facility and storage units, but we also want each individual unit to be secured in the best way possible. Where to Buy The good news ...

Autumn Assessment: 6 Tips for Organizing your Storage Unit

We’ve all heard of spring cleaning but what about taking an autumn assessment? With the change of season, it’s a perfect time to assess your stuff. With a little bit of cleaning and organizing you can easily clear up some extra space in your storage unit. Here are a 6 tips to do your own autumn assessment: 1. Take Inventory Pull out big items or boxes from your unit so you have room to see everything that's inside. 2. Clear the Clutter Get rid of clutter, trash, and items that you no longer have use for. This will help open up what items need to be organized. 3. Organize Your Items Organize items into three categories. (1) items you want to keep in storage, (2) items to take back to your home, and (3) items to discard by donation, sale, or trash. 4. Box and Label If you have a lot of loose items, consolidate them by category (example: kitchen supplies, bedroom knick knacks, etc) and store those items in a box. Don’t forget to label what’s inside the box for easy finding when you need those items in the future. If you have other boxes in your unit that are not labeled, take a peek inside. If they are items you want to keep, clearly label them. 5. Seasonal Swaps Take any fall or winter items out of your unit and replace them with summer items you are no longer using at home. 6. Reorganize Your Layout As you place items back into your storage unit, group them by category (example: bedrooms, kitchen, outdoor supplies, tools, etc.). If possible, leave a small walkway so items are easily accessible in the future. If your unit is packed full, place least important items in the back and most important in the front. If you're in need of a different size or additional unit, Self Storage New Mexico can help! Rent online or by calling us today. ...

With all the planning you need to do, transportation to organize and days off work to take, you are going to be very busy. Use the following tips to make your packing simpler. Sort it Out A good place to start when packing up clothing is to take some time to sift through your wardrobe. Donating items that no longer fit or just are not part of your style any longer is a great way to clear some space out. Separate your clothing into keep, throw away and donate piles. Taking time to do this prior to packing will not only create more space for things you really want and make the packing process easier; it will also mean there is less to sort through when you get to your place! Clean it Up The smell of clean laurdy cannot be beat! Before packing up be sure your clothing is freshly laundered, this will make it ready for packing. Opening a musty smelling box of clothes in a brand new living space is not something you will want to do, so taking the extra step to wash all clothing prior to the big move is something you want to do. Popping some scented sachets or dryer sheets into your clothing boxes can give a boost of freshness as well! Ironing and pressing your clothes before packing can ensure they will be wear ready when pulling them out again.
