Donate Unwanted Belongings: Use this time to get rid of any items that are no longer of use to you. Check for duplicate household goods, furniture you no longer use, or clothes you are not wearing. There are several place to donate items such as Goodwill. Goodwill accepts clothing, furniture, electronics, and many other types of donated items. If you have something someone else could possibly use, consider donating to Goodwill.
Another option for donating items is to have a garage sale. This is a great way to get rid of unwanted items and make some extra money at the same time. Be sure to advertise your garage sale in advance so that people know when and where it will be.
Avoiding Packing Items You Will Not Use: It's tempting to want to bring everything with you when moving, but this will only make the process more difficult and stressful. Only pack the items that you know you will use in your new home. This will not only make the move easier, but it will also save you money on packing materials and moving costs.
Separate Essentials: Avoid the aggravation of not being able to locate anything by packing a duffle bag or backpack with all of the items you'll require for your first night in your new home. This may include prescriptions, adapters, toiletries, and a change of clothing. Tip: make a list of everything you'll need to pack in advance so that you don't forget anything.
Pack by Room: Packing by room is a huge time saver–you won't have to spend hours searching for misplaced items come moving day. Be sure to clearly label all of your boxes with the contents and the destination room. This will save you (and your helpers) a lot of headache come moving day.

Contain All Hardware: Avoid the pain of misplaced little hardware—tie all of the loose screws and hardware to the proper piece of furniture in a plastic bag. Nothing is worse than having to reassemble your new furnishings only to discover you're missing one hardware piece.
Keep Cords Untangled: To prevent things from getting tangled, use a paper towel roll to link electronic cables, headphones, and necklaces. You may also use an egg carton to keep rings, necklaces, and other jewelry from knotting together.
Consider Taking Photos of Electronics Before You Move: Take pictures of your electronics and the cords that connect to each outlet before you pack. It will be much easier to re-install electronic goods after this process is completed. Once you have taken photos, label each cord with tape and/or sharpie. You will know which cord goes to what this way.
