Secure Your Unit: The Best Locks to Use and Why

Self Storage Tips

Once you find a storage unit that fits your needs you’ll need to secure your unit with a lock. There are many options on the market but at Self Storage New Mexico we suggest getting the most secure, break-in proof lock possible.
Locks we recommend
Our top two picks for locking your storage unit are disc locks and closed shackle padlocks. Both of these lock types will give an added layer of protection to your unit and belongings.
1. Disc lock
The disc lock is the #1 lock type we recommend at Self Storage New Mexico because of the tamper-resistant security it offers your storage unit. This type of lock is disc shaped and has a short shackle that sits tightly around the latch of the unit. Disc locks are very hard to pick as they have anti-pick pins and dual locking mechanisms.
2. Closed Shackle Padlock
A closed shackle padlock is another great choice for securing your storage unit. This type of lock is unique because of its shackle. The shackle is the U-shaped bar at the top of the lock that secures the lock to your unit. A closed shackle padlock has a shorter and thicker shackle than regular padlocks. In addition, this type of lock has “shoulders” that extend up toward the top of the shackle acting as a protective case. These three features deter bolt cutters from being able to be used thus preventing break-ins.
Invest in the Best
While the locks listed above cost more than regular padlocks, the investment is worth the peace of mind you’ll have knowing your belongings are secured in your unit. We do not recommend single or multiple combination padlocks because we know they offer less assurance against break-ins. Of course, at Self Storage New Mexico we take many measures to secure the facility and storage units, but we also want each individual unit to be secured in the best way possible.
Where to Buy
The good news is that disc locks and closed shackle padlocks are pretty easy to find. You can pick one up from Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, or favorite home improvement store. If you prefer to shop online, Amazon offers a plethora of lock options.
